Stories from students like you

Real experiences from LGBTQ+ students in vocational education.

At first, I was scared to come out at school. I thought people would judge me or treat me differently. But being part of this project changed everything. When we performed stories about real LGBTQ+ experiences, I saw my classmates cry—not because they felt sorry for us, but because they finally understood. Now I don't hide who I am. I'm just Jerom, and that's enough.

I never really thought about gender diversity until we started working on this musical. Hearing my trans classmate talk about their struggles opened my eyes. I realized I had made assumptions without even knowing it. Now I always ask for people's pronouns, and I speak up when I hear transphobic jokes. Small changes can make such a big difference.

Being non-binary in a vocational school felt lonely. There were no role models, no one talking about it. This project gave me a community. Meeting other LGBTQ+ students from different countries showed me that we're everywhere, we're strong, and we're creating change. I'm now part of my school's diversity committee, and I'm not afraid to use my voice anymore.

FAQ
Questions you might have
Honest answers to common questions from LGBTQ+ students
What if I'm not sure about my identity yet?
That's completely okay! Identity is a journey, not a destination. You don't need to have everything figured out. It's perfectly normal to question, explore, and change how you identify over time. What matters is that you're being honest with yourself and taking the time you need.
How do I come out to my classmates/teachers?
There's no one "right" way to come out, and you're never obligated to do so. When you're ready, start with people you trust. Some students find it easier to tell close friends first, others prefer talking to a supportive teacher. You can come out gradually or all at once, whatever feels right for you. Remember: your safety and comfort come first.
What if I face discrimination or bullying?
Discrimination is never acceptable. If you experience bullying or harassment, document what happened and report it to a trusted teacher, school counselor, or administrator. Most schools have anti-bullying policies that include LGBTQ+ protections. If your school doesn't respond, reach out to external organizations for support, you'll find resources at the bottom of this page.
How can I support LGBTQ+ friends?
Listen without judgment. Use their correct name and pronouns. Stand up for them when you hear discriminatory comments. Ask how you can help instead of assuming. Educate yourself about LGBTQ+ issues. Most importantly, just be their friend, treat them like anyone else, because that's what they are.
Where can I find LGBTQ+ community in my school?
Look for GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) or similar student groups. If your school doesn't have one, consider starting one with support from a teacher. Check if there are diversity clubs or events. Even one supportive friend or teacher can be the start of building community. Online communities can also provide connection while you're building local support.
Can I access the curriculum materials created in this project?
Some materials are available to students, particularly testimonials, stories, and informational resources. For curriculum and lesson plans, we recommend working with your teachers. You can encourage them to request materials through our contact page, or you can share this website with supportive educators at your school.
